Making the Move to Online Resources

Noella Owen, North American Sales Manager, Informa Healthcare

Finding the right balance between delivering resources on a tight budget and maximizing any return on investment is a trick – regardless of industry. For librarians, the concept is all too familiar.

Librarians are under constant pressure – from faculty, research staff, and students – to fulfill the ultimate goal of delivering information.  Users are interested in consuming more information and expect to access content 24/7.

Digital content isn’t new, but the pace at which consumers require data in this format is increasing. Clearly budgets to pay for this demand may not match, and librarians need to rely more on creative methods to integrate more digital resources.

Informa Healthcare is aware of these developments and is looking to partner with librarians to help get the most out of these resources.  Whether access to journals, books or other data is needed, digital delivery allows librarians maximize tightening budgets and keep pace with demand.

From marketing support to customer service, the goal for Informa Healthcare is to become a partner in providing content – aligning only the relevant information an institution requires to fulfill patrons’ needs. This approach creates better, long lasting relationships with customers and end users.

Informahealthcare.com now offers more than 585 online books and 165 journals – all available for purchase in different formats. For online books, customers can purchase by book or by collection. For journals, purchase individually, by archive collections or by therapy area.

Librarians are also provided with administrative support tools – such as COUNTER-compliant statistics, free MARC records and the ability to manage IP ranges – when they purchase access to content on informapharmascience.com. These tools are essential in measuring usage, controlling access or linking to other systems.

Budgets and costs always seem to be moving in opposite directions, limiting opportunities. By creating fruitful partnerships, Informa Healthcare is going to help bridge this growing gap.

Coming Up:  Analyzing usage statistics is an important tool to help justify costs.  Stay tuned for next month as the focus shifts to the important of usage statics and how they are influencing purchasing decisions.
